In the face of adversity, the women of rural India do not admit defeat. They set out for water with earthen pots, the busiest hotspot during the waking hours. They share laughter, conversation and debate before the day begins and queue up in front of the bore pump as part of their daily ritual. They experience a different side of reality, staying fit with all the walking they dedicate just to obtain water. This artful wooden toy is an innovation of the Kondapalli community of Andhra Pradesh, a lineage of revered toymakers continually plunging forward.

The Kondapalli artisan uses traditional techniques of crafting, starting with a log of locally abundant softwood known as Tella Poniki. Fashioning the wood into the silhouette of the woman and the water pump, he artfully perfects every nook and corner of the wood before he fastens them together. The toy comes to life after the colour is rendered, finishing off in perfection.

Feeding the infinite water demands of Urban India, villages are becoming barren and incapable of providing for its people. Women spend hours in the scorching sun in search of potable water for bare survival. Allowing a glimpse into the natural lifestyles of men and women in rural India, this Kondapalli toy is a delightful addition to your home.
